Fantasy and sci-fi artist Amanda Schank interview – Super Magfest 2018 – youtube

Amanda Schank is a digital artist. I interviewed her at Super Magfest 2018 about her art, inspirations and method of working.

1:26 – Her Demon Slayer picture on an alligator rug is one of her favorite works because it’s very much “her”. It’s a line art heavy piece of work. It has a pin-up style. She likes adding shadows to the work. She combines urban wear and medieval images.

4:49 – She’ll stare at a piece of 40 minutes to see anything that needs to be fixed before she declares something done. She’ll even paint over prints once they’re ready for sale at conventions.

9:39 – She grew up watching Inuyasha and got into the mood of painting those characters. It’s influenced her throughout her career. She does everything on computer. She likes using a Cintiq for digital drawing and sketching.

12:57 – Lately she’s been inspired by lots of sci-fi. She’s creating a space station universe art book. Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Cowboy Bebop are currently inspiring her. She watches a lot of sci-fi to finish the book. She loves both the visuals and the characters and their motivations too. Evangelion also inspires her but she isn’t drawing lots of mechs.

16:14 – Her tablet is her most important tool. It’s about a 16 inch screen and she feel comfortably working on it. Photoshop has a nice textured brush too.

18:11 – In 2012 she had done a large painting of Red Riding Hood in armor. Now she revisited the character for a new piece. Right now she most enjoys doing textured line art for pin-up style work. She likes creating tattoo friendly art.

21:30 – She started making art when she was one. When she was nine or so she started watching anime and it was so different from Western cartoons she was fascinated by it. She didn’t care about art museums on school field trips until she got into art. She started posting the art online and she’s had a big following since then.

23:20 – She was on a site called Guyana online where you had an avatar that you could buy clothes for. She started selling her art to buy avatar clothes and then she realized she could make real money for her art. She realized she could make a living from art. She’s been doing commissions for 14 years.

26:14 – Artists are behind the scenes in everything in business. Art directors and artists create media, billboards and so on. They’re crucial to anything visual.

29:20 – She loves the Fifth Element and she watched it all the time with her dad. Star Wars is an inspiration. She loves Child Thief by Brom. He’s a writer and illustrator.   Cowboy Bebop has stuck with her throughout. Neverending Story is one of her loves. She’s been trying to do Fifth Element fan art for a long time but wants to make it perfect so hasn’t finished it.

32:41 – She loved the concept art for Valerian but she wasn’t happy with the movie at all. The visuals weren’t shown as much as advertised. The movie was too rushed to enjoy the art in the movie.

34:51 – Her gallery is on https://amsbt.artstation.com/.

Writer Robin C Farrell – Super Magfest 2018 – youtube

Robin C. Farrell is a writer and video editor. She has worked on the upcoming web series “Genre Wars” and has written a novel based on the story. I was able to interview Robin at Magfest 2018.

0:54 – Robin talks about writing screenplays and a novel.

1:29 – The novel grew from an online film competition and grew into a web series called “Genre Wars”. It began as a deadliest warrior kind of idea.

2:50 – Robin liked the idea of a genre being a culture and all these genres mixed together in one world.

4:52 – Robin discusses the writing process. Feedback from beta readers is an important factor.

6:22 – Robin likes to focus on characters in her writing. She often prefers character development to plot points when watching Doctor Who for example.

7:15 – Robin discusses her cosplay and steampunk Ariel.

11:13 – Robin again discusses how she goes about writing and what she needs to do her work.

13:08 – Her cosplay development involves watching her characters over and over or listening to sound tracks.

14:20 – Robin likes going back and forth between screenwriting and prose writing to compare the processes.

15:43 – Robin likes the display part of cosplay the most. She calls herself an extrovert introvert. She created an alternative storyline for her steampunk Ariel.

17:40 – Robin talks about how she got into writing and shy she continues to write. She then talks about how she got into cosplay because she was really into Halloween. She transitioned from that into cosplay to keep putting costumes together.

22:16 – Robin’s first big success was being able to work as a video editor since she loves it so much. That pushed her to take more risks with cosplay and putting her writing out there for people to comment on.

24:34 – Robin talks about how storytelling takes many different forms. She compares the kinds of escapism out there. Coplay has become more mainstream.

Blerdcon founder Hilton George – Super Magfest 2018 – youtube

Hilton George is founder of Blerdcon. He spent a half hour talking with me at Super Magfest 2018 about setting up the convention and his motivations and goals for the con.

0:45 – Hilton George talks about Blerdcon. It’s a combination of black and nerd and the convention is designed to bring together communities that have been underrepresented in other conventions. This will be the second year. They had 1,800 people at the first one. They expect 3 and 5 thousand this year.

2:20 – Sometimes people wonder if the con is only for black people. Hilton explains that it’s a celebration of many cultures and it’s all inclusive.

3:45 – Blerdcon brings in more emphasis on Afro-futurism than perhaps other conventions do. Black Panther will likely increase interest in Afro-Futurism. 10-15% of their panels are on Afro-futurism. Blerdcon is hoping to bring in a guest connected to Black Panther.

5:35 – Blerdcon has used advisors from Magfest, Otakon, and other conventions to help develop their own convention. Hilton has shadowed con runners to help develop blerdcon. Community members are happy to assist.

7:10 – Hilton is inspired by people stepping out of the box and people who create something new. Geek culture is going mainstream. Disney may buy it all out but STEM outreach and creative inspiration will have been made part of the mainstream. Being weird is a positive thing.

8:45 – People have been the most important thing to make Blerdcon happen. Mutual inspiration makes things happen. The many volunteers and committees get the credit for making Blerdcon happen.

9:43 – Hilton loves working with people. He likes being on panels, representing the con and speaking with people. He loves to spread the message.

11:00 – Every nerd feels disconnected from others. Black nerds feel this disconnection but are also rejected by their own black community. They’ve had a double level of separation.

13:00 – The Stranger Things black character was Hilton. He was the one black kid in all his gaming crews. He was always Ernie Hudson in Ghostbusters Halloween groups. There is diversity in fandom but the discussions about these groups don’t happen in conventions unless they’re written into the programming. People may attend conventions and not want to create issues by talking about diversity issues unless there’s a forum for them at the convention.

16:00 – Black female nerds are the most marginalized but most participatory in a sense in nerd culture. Blerdcon tries to highlight black female nerds as much as possible. Blerdcon can also show other conventions the success of highlighting marginalized communities.

18:22 – At the first Blerdcon, they had no idea what would work. There’s no template for a black convention. They tried everything. Some things worked and they know what works now and what resonated with fans. There’s just as much effort in producing it but it’s more focused. They hope to have more of everything this second time around.

20:30 – Blerdcon didn’t have any major problems in the first year due to the guidance they got from others. This time around they’ll have more signage and support better interaction guidance. They know how to do better registration and badge-ing and take care of audio and visual stuff. Scheduling will be better.

23:30 – Conventions and geeks life allow people to get to know each other before they realize that society has told them to avoid each other for some prejudicial reason. Hilton wants more dialogue between people. Geek culture might be the new way of life for people. Geek conventions might be the way for people to learn how to stop mistreating each other.

26:19 – Hilton was born and raised on Star Wars and comic books. He was a black kid growing up in the country in North Carolina. Then Dungeons and Dragons was his most interactive geek activity. He didn’t have this community available to him when he was a geek but kids now will have access. New fans have to be welcomed.

29:00 – Hilton loves Star Trek 2 and quotes it whenever it’s on. His long term plan is for Blerdcon to be Dragoncon of the North in ten years. He wants to grow Blerdcon into multiple hotels. Tourism in the area can be taken advantage of to grow the con.

31:30 – Cons are like a family reunion for Hilton. www.Blerdcon.com is the site for more information. They are on all the big social media sites. The con is on July 27-29, 2018, 24/7 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City.
