Sci-fi author Peter David interview – Far Point 2018 – youtube

Peter David has been a professional writer for over 30 years. He’s written novels, comic books, television, video games and so on. He wrote Incredible Hulk for 12 years and has written both DC and Marvel comics. He’s written numerous Star Trek novels and comic books. I was able to interview him at Far Point 2018. He has a website and is on twitter and facebook.

1:26 – Peter David has been working on the third book in the Hidden Earth trilogy and it’s taken a while so he hopes fans like it. He’s also writing the Scarlet Spider for Marvel Comics and a Battlestar Galactica 6 issue limited series where the original crew meets the crew from the new series.

2:36 – He liked the Fallen Angel comic book series. He likes his Atlantis chronicles and his Hulk work. However, he’ll look at his past work and still find things he doesn’t like. He finds things he doesn’t think he did correctly.

5:20 – People often ask what inspires him. He says what he makes from his work inspires him. But he also has too much in his brain to not be a writer. It’s an addiction and obsession. Ideas come to writers ferociously and with clarity.

7:16 – Fan interaction is his favorite part of writing. The act itself is a very lonely business. He likes being told what fans like and don’t like.

8:11 – He started writing as a kid and kept going. His father was a reporter and he thought he might be a newspaperman. But instead he became a fiction writer. He reads a lot to get better at writing. For example, he didn’t like present tense writing until he saw Stephen King had done it.

11:20 – The writer should show society the ways it can be better. Science fiction might be the best way to do this. He enjoys the Orville because it shows the way things might be. The shows has gotten better with each episode.

13:33 – He enjoys Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman, Stan Lee. He uses other writers to reflect on his own work. The older masters provide good lesson but the newer writers inspire too with the new things they try.

14:51 – He doesn’t use science as the basis for his works but he makes sure his Star Trek novels have consistent science. For example he wanted to make Odo from Deep Space 9 maintain his mass when he changes shape.

16:31 – Mr. David likes movies and tv but he will critize them. For example Superman IV made him think that the UN would not be happy with Superman’s decision to get rid of nuclear weapons. It would be Superman against the world. They would get Lex Luthor to fight him. If he ever wrote Superman, that’s the story he would write.

18:46 – Mr. David talked to Dale Keown, his artist on Incredible Hulk, about predicting how movies will go. Writers can figure out how a story will go. Mr. David figured out how Tango and Cash would go after watching for 30 minutes. The most recent Star Wars film fooled him though when Luke showed up for the final battle in the way he did. He also predicted Sixth Sense after the first two minutes.

22:16 – He would love to teleport. He’d like to be like Nightcrawler.

Sci-fi author Timothy Zahn interview

Author Timothy Zahn has been writing professionally since 1984. He’s written a number of well-regarded Star Wars novels, as well as the Manticore Ascendent trilogy, the Cobra trilogy and the young adult Dragonback series. I was able to interview Mr. Zahn at Far Point 2018.

1:17 – Mr. Zahn’s latest work is the ninth book in the Cobra series. It’s the last Cobra book for a while. Right before that he finished the Star Wars Thrawn novel and coming up is the third book in the Manticore Ascendant series.

1:55 – He likes his Quadrille series. The Star Wars books. Everything has been fun to write. He has about 55 books published.

3:01 – He outlines his books and knows where they’re going. So plot threads wind up at the 100,000-word mark. His middle grade books are about 50,000.

4:05 – Sometimes his cat will join him in his writing. He started with short stories and developed from there. The second story was important to show he’s not a one hit wonder. Once he started writing Star Wars novels everything jumped forward fast.

5:28 – He doesn’t get to read much fiction. It feels too much like research. He reads a lot of history for his books. For example, the Nazi desire to invade Switzerland has been interesting. Science is interesting for his writing but is part of the grab bag like history. He’s seen some of his story ideas become actual inventions.

7:41 – he loved sci-fi when he was young. His favorites were Larry Niven, Theodore Sturgeon, Keith Lamar, and Alistair McClane. Those writers inspired him.

8:31 – When he was young his favorite X-Man was Cyclops. He also read a lot of comic books. X-Men, Flash, Fantastic Four.

9:15 – He has a couple of Star Wars novels he’d like to pitch to LucasFilms. He also has some personal works he wants to pitch to his agent.

10:03 – He’s on Facebook under Timothy Zahn and he goes to conventions often.

Fantasy game developer Jordan P interview

Jordan Pierson loves video games and started creating them himself. He’s with JEP games.com and I met him at Magfest 2018. He told me about their newest game Akari

1:22 – Jordan tells me about the game Akari. It’s a 3D anime inspired world. It’s his second game. He says a game delayed is better than a game rushed since there are often bugs and other problems. He wants a game to be polished and tight before releasing it.

3:09 – He’s inspired by video games since he loves them. He’s a Game Cube kid. One of his friends told him he should makes and his brother even tried. He loves making games.

4:03 – He loves listening to music when working. He loves anime music, maybe Final Fantasy music. He takes tons of notes that are all over the place.

5:24 – He loves working on the art style and the environment. He wants the player immersed in the world. His cousin helped on the sprites for the game. He wanted the world to be tight. It has a feel of ancient feudal Japan, India, China and Siamese culture. Jordan’s been into these cultures and it’s not just for the game.

7:34 – His brother made a PC video game based on Leroy Jenkins. This inspired Jordan. He kept trying different game engines. He loves fixing bugs and making basic things happen. Testing is big thing to get Akari completed.

10:08 – His first game was tested at Skills USA in Louisville, Kentucky. It won gold at states and he was blown away. It changed his thinking and convinced him he could create a game people like. He then won third at nationals. He loves how many disciplines come together in game development.

12:05 – Game designers are mad artists. They are awesome entrepreneurs trying to give to others. They can change the world with new designs and new stories.

12:14 – One of his favorite games when he was young was Star Fox Assault. Each character has its own importance. They feel like family. Fire Emblem was another great one. He’s a big Marvel fan and loves video editing. But games are immersive and movies don’t have that experience. Some people think things games are for kids. But games make as much money as music and movies.

16:05 – The game industry has something special and keeps getting bigger. It’ll take over industries. Game movies are pretty awful right now. It’s hard to integrate a game into a movie. The immersive experience is taken out.

18:22 – He has a big game in mind that’s too large scale right now. It’s an anime action-slash theme game. He wants game story lines to keep impacting each other in the game.

19:44 – He’s had a real blast being at Magfest talking to players and game designers. The blind game fans have really inspired him. Akari is at Jepgames.com. They’re also on facebook, twitter and instagram.
