Game of Thrones and Star Wars actor – Ian McElhinney interview

Ian McElhinney has been a stage and screen actor for close to 40 years. He’s done a wide range of roles including acting in both the Star Wars franchise, Krypton, and in Game of Thrones as Barristan Selmy. We talked at the 2018 Great Philadelphia Comic Con about acting in general, how he got into it and how he does his work, and also about his work specifically in Star Wars and GoT.

1:30 – Ian talks about how he got into acting. He started at University trying to study something serious. He was getting a degree outside of Boston, Brandeis, and they had a theater degree. He decided he loved acting too much to not get a theater studies degree.

3:55 – He went back to the British theater and taught for a few years. Then he went back into the gaming game and had to get an equity card. At age 30, he went back to Northern Ireland to work as an actor in Belfast.

5:56 – He did a lot of screen work that reflected modern Irish politics and he was often put in a box. He had more freedom on the stage.

11:00 – Ian discusses what its like playing a character in sci-fi and fantasy including the Game of Thrones.

14:50 – Wearing a knight costume gave an Ian a different sense of movement. Wearing armor and wielding a sword gives one a new sense of weight and such. Props can give you a new sense of how you relate to others.

17:20 – Ian loves being on stage and getting the feeling of having connected with the audience. He’s also started enjoying rehearsing a lot more.

19:42 – Ian addresses how he approached his roles in Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

20:30 – Ian loves acting and will keep doing it as long as he can.

21:40 – He was in a Ken Brannaugh production and he met Jack Lemmon. He had always been a big fan of Jack and loved working with him. It was the only time he did a fan thing and he asked Jack for a favor.

24:50 – He had to give up science while in school because the system required one to choose science or the arts. But he really liked science and misses having learned it.

25:55 – He’s more of a fan of gritty dramas rather than sci-fi or fantasy. However, as a child he would have liked to be able to fly and enjoy the freedom and sensation of flight.

28:18 – Ian believes that apart from entertaining people, actors can help people think outside the box and to broaden their minds.

30:00 – Ian has a twitter account @serianmc

Sci-fi author Timothy Zahn interview – Far Point 2018 – youtube

Author Timothy Zahn has been writing professionally since 1984. He’s written a number of well-regarded Star Wars novels, as well as the Manticore Ascendent trilogy, the Cobra trilogy and the young adult Dragonback series. I was able to interview Mr. Zahn at Far Point 2018.

1:17 – Mr. Zahn’s latest work is the ninth book in the Cobra series. It’s the last Cobra book for a while. Right before that he finished the Star Wars Thrawn novel and coming up is the third book in the Manticore Ascendant series.

1:55 – He likes his Quadrille series. The Star Wars books. Everything has been fun to write. He has about 55 books published.

3:01 – He outlines his books and knows where they’re going. So plot threads wind up at the 100,000-word mark. His middle grade books are about 50,000.

4:05 – Sometimes his cat will join him in his writing. He started with short stories and developed from there. The second story was important to show he’s not a one hit wonder. Once he started writing Star Wars novels everything jumped forward fast.

5:28 – He doesn’t get to read much fiction. It feels too much like research. He reads a lot of history for his books. For example, the Nazi desire to invade Switzerland has been interesting. Science is interesting for his writing but is part of the grab bag like history. He’s seen some of his story ideas become actual inventions.

7:41 – he loved sci-fi when he was young. His favorites were Larry Niven, Theodore Sturgeon, Keith Lamar, and Alistair McClane. Those writers inspired him.

8:31 – When he was young his favorite X-Man was Cyclops. He also read a lot of comic books. X-Men, Flash, Fantastic Four.

9:15 – He has a couple of Star Wars novels he’d like to pitch to LucasFilms. He also has some personal works he wants to pitch to his agent.

10:03 – He’s on facebook under Timothy Zahn and he goes to conventions often.

Weapons maker and carver Ferenc Gregor interview

Ferenc Gregor is a first generation Hungarian who carves in Maryland. I met his Man at Arms: Reforged crew at Magfest 2018 and interviewed Ferenc. He works in wood, horn, fossil ivories and stone. He also carves pieces for weapons.

1:18 – Introduction

1:25 – I ask Ferenc Gregor what weapon he’s most proud of at the show. He talks about the Wonder Woman sword he helped to make on the show Man At Arms Reforged.

2:17 – I ask when he knows a weapon or carving is finished. He says he’s been working for 30 years and there’s a fine line. He says that the show has deadlines which they need to meet.

3:04 – I ask what inspires Ferenc. He says the drive to create inspires him. He enjoys going outdoors and works a lot with natural materials. He enjoys chiseling and doing stone work.

3:55 – He talks about the various memorials he’s done in stone including some memorial and military ones.

4:14 – Ferenc talks about needing coffee to work and then talks about using different tools and processes when working on the Man At Arms show. He likes using a hammer and chisel and power tools. He focuses on learning the basics of learning a tool before using it.

5:37 – He mentions enjoying doing very highly detailed work.

6:25 – He worked on the Sword of Green Destiny from the movie Crouching Tiger. Ferenc worked on the jade piece used in the sword.

7:05 – He started carving because he couldn’t afford painting and drawing supplies. He started with carving antlers even though he enjoyed painting. He pursued carving to start making money.

8:10 – He says that if you want to be an artist, you must keep producing. Have the passion but also keep working like it’s a job. He still learns from any piece he creates. He always learns and challenges himself.

9:32 – His first professional sale gave him a confidence boost. He used to do the Santa Fe artist circuit and was inspired by having people who could choose among artists to have chosen him and paid him for his work. There’s no better feeling than to have someone spend hard earned money on your work.

10:58 – He says that when everything is gone in the world, we’ll be remembered by our artwork. The things that artists create inspire people. In addition, everything rigid around us must first have been sculpted by someone before its produced. It all comes from the artist’s mind.

12:08 – Ferenc is inspired by Asimov’s works. He’s a Tolkien fan from way back. He loves ancient history too. Creating the artwork from the past teaches you how they lived and felt. He’s done many styles. He’s Hungarian and he hodls that culture close to his heart and has done work in that style.

14:05 – For the show, he’d like to create the Highlander katanas since there’s so much carving work with them. He mentioned appreciating the fans of the show and that they can follow the show on instagram and on facebook. He said that fans should just come by and say hi. His personal website is Szobrasz Studios and he’s online. The word is the Hungarian word for sculpture.
